We’re writing an ongoing series of articles explaining the ideas and technologies that go into building a web site, in a clear, non-technical way.

We call them the “Client Guides” series, because they were born out of a desire to communicate more clearly with our clients. Describing complex subjects in plain English isn’t easy, particularly for nerds like us. It takes time and effort to get it right.

These guides help to ensure that we won’t accidentally slip back into geek-speak and acronyms when talking about your project.

Every time we write a guide, we make it available on our blog and invite feedback from everyone who reads it. We use this feedback to improve our future communication, so everyone wins.

Back when we started developing web sites, we spent many hours creating fancy Gantt charts and project plans, none of which helped us to deliver a successful web site.

That’s why our online project management software doesn’t contain a single chart, fancy or otherwise. It has messages. It has comments. It has to-do lists and milestones. And that’s about it.
